Fungi
Table of Contents
1. Hyphae
The body of a fungus, that resembles entangled fine strings. The animal membranes are covered with chitin, making engulfing not possible. Chemicals specific to each species are excreted for digestion.
Two kinds of hyphae are there:
- Septate Hyphae: Series of cells separated by cell walls
- Coenocytic Hyphae: A long single cell
They fuse when they meet, and form a complicated mycelium network.
2. Lichen
Fungi in symbiosis with algae or cyanobacteria.
3. Yeasts
Single celled fungi that reproduce by budding (also called fission).
Some fungi can switch between living as yeast or as hyphae.
4. Reproduction
Some can reproduce both sexually or asexually. They spread spores distinct to each species.
5. Mycorrhiza
Symbiosis of fungus and tree, in which the fungus gives nutrients from the soil to the root and tree gives the product of photosynthesis back.
Two forms exists:
- Arbuscular Mycorrhiza: Fungus penetrate the cells in the root
- Ectomycorrhiza: Fungus slips between the cells
6. Endophytes
Fungi that inhabit in plants. Some of them help the plant, some cause diseases.
7. Entomogenous Fungi
Parasitic fungi that infect insects.
7.1. Ophicordyceps Unilateralis
- Zombie ant fungi
