1. Definitions
1.1. Specific Gravity
The ratio of the density of a material \( \rho_s \) to the density of pure water \( \rho_w \). \[ G_s := \frac{\rho_s}{\rho_w} \rho \]
1.2. Bulk Density
Or sometimes, wet density or simply density.
\[ \rho := \frac{M_s + M_w}{V_s + V_w + V_a}. \] The mass of the air is ignored.
1.3. Dry Density
\[ \rho_d := \frac{M_s}{V_s + V_w + V_a}}. \]
1.4. Buoyant Density
The effective when submerged under water \[ \rho' := \rho - \rho_w. \]
1.5. Water Content
\[ w := \frac{M_w}{M_s} \]
1.6. Void Ratio
\[ e := \frac{V_v}{V_s} \]
1.7. Porosity
\[ n := \frac{V_v}{V_t} \]
1.8. Degree of Saturation
\[ S := \frac{V_w}{V_v} \]
2. Dilatancy
Volume change under shear deformation.
It is observed in granular materials. For example, the sand at the beach swells up when stamped upon.
